Breaking News: Techiman Elevated to Metropolitan Status, Sunyani Left Behind

Understanding the Reasoning Behind the Upgrade

In a surprise move, the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development has announced the upgrade of Techiman from a Municipal to a Metropolitan city, leapfrogging Sunyani, the former capital of the then Brong Ahafo Region. The decision has sparked widespread debate, with many questioning why Sunyani, once the regional capital, remains a Municipal city.

According to the 1993 Local Government Act 462, the upgrade of a city’s status is based on specific criteria. Section 2(1) of the Act states that a Metropolitan District shall be created when:

– The population of the district exceeds 250,000 people (Section 2(1)(a))
– The district has a high density of population and economic activities (Section 2(1)(b))
– The district serves as a major commercial, industrial, or administrative center (Section 2(1)(c))

Insiders reveal that Techiman’s rapid growth, driven by its strategic location as a major transportation hub and commercial center, contributed significantly to its upgrade. Techiman’s population has been steadily increasing, with estimates suggesting it has surpassed the 250,000 threshold.

In contrast, Sunyani, despite its historical significance as a regional capital, has experienced slower growth. While Sunyani remains an important administrative center, its economic activities and population growth have not met the Metropolitan status criteria.

Key Factors in Techiman’s Upgrade:

1. Strategic Location: Techiman’s position as a major transportation hub, connecting the northern and southern regions, has fueled economic growth.

2. Agricultural Hub: Techiman is a significant producer of cash crops, including cocoa, maize, and soybeans.

3. Population Growth: Techiman’s population has consistently increased, exceeding the 250,000 threshold.

4. Infrastructure Development: Recent investments in infrastructure, including roads and market facilities, have enhanced Techiman’s economic viability.

What’s Next for Sunyani?

While Sunyani’s Municipal status remains unchanged, local authorities are urged to focus on accelerating economic growth, improving infrastructure, and increasing population density to meet the Metropolitan status criteria.

The Ministry’s decision underscores the government’s commitment to decentralization and rural development. As Ghana continues to urbanize, the upgrade of Techiman to Metropolitan status reflects the country’s evolving economic landscape.
