The football community is in mourning as the devastating news of former U-17 player Newton Opoku-Mensah’s passing spreads like wildfire. The Sunyani New Town baller, who was making a name for himself with Fortuna Dusseldorf U-19 in Germany, tragically lost his life in a swimming accident.
On Tuesday evening, Newton’s life took a heartbreaking turn when he had an accident while swimming in a Duisburg lake.
Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away in the hospital.
The news has left his club, Fortuna Dusseldorf, and the entire football community in shock and deep mourning.
Fortuna Dusseldorf’s Instagram post announcing the tragic news reads:
“Fortuna mourns the loss of U17 player Newton Opoku-Mensah
The young player had an accident while swimming in a Duisburg lake on Tuesday evening and later died in hospital as a result of the accident. The entire club is shocked and in deep mourning.
Training and matches for all youth teams from U9 to U19 are suspended until further notice. Reporting on the youth teams will also be suspended for the time being.
The entire Fortuna family’s condolences go out to the relatives, the entire U17 team and the employees at the NLZ.
